When To Replace Your AC Part 1

Hello! Welcome to Part 1 of our series “When To Replace Your AC”. In this series, we’ll talk about the signs that air conditioners show when they want to rest permanently. You might think that contacting your local HVAC contractors in Coon Rapids MN at All Climate Mechanical to repair your machine would be a better move. However, when your AC starts showing these signs, repeated repair costs can quickly pile up and you might be better off with a new one. So, here we go! AC Repair Coon Rapids MN
Your AC Is More Than 10 Years Old
Usually, air conditioners that are nicely maintained start to give up by their 15th year of use. So, if you have an AC that is more than 10 years old and is demanding expensive repairs, a financially smarter move would be to replace it. This is because you would anyway need to replace your machine in a short while (remember the 15 year lifespan is an ideal case scenario). And with age, repairs also get expensive. And when you consider the fact that newer machines are way more efficient than older ones, you realize that getting a new AC would actually save you money in the long run.
Your AC Uses R22 Freon
R22 is a type of freon (freons are a particular set of chemical compounds ….) that was used extensively as a refrigerant for air conditioning units. However, it was discovered that freons adversely impact the environment. For example, they significantly contribute towards the depletion of the ozone layer. This is why the US is banning their sale from this year onwards 2020. Unsurprisingly, the costs of Freons, and R22 by extension, are rising exponentially. If your air conditioner relies on R22 as a refrigerant, you’ll have to settle with irrationally expensive services. This is why it makes more sense to have your unit replaced it so that you are not burdened by huge Freon costs anymore.
Your AC Repairs Are Expensive
It is a general rule of thumb for machines that if the cost to repair one is a substantial portion of its purchase price, it’s better to replace it. The same goes for air conditioners. Some will be surprised to hear that the cost of fixing old units might be as high as two-thirds of an equally powerful new one. That is why it makes to sense to weigh the costs of the repair against the costs of a new unit. If the cost of the repair would cover a large part of a new system, and especially if your air conditioner is more than a decade old or if it uses R22 Freon, it will likely make more financial sense to replace it.
